Laboratory peptide documentation: how to read COAs and lot records
A practical research-use guide to connecting a catalog listing, physical lot, and analytical report without treating any single document as more than it establishes.
Research peptide documentation works best as a connected record rather than a single certificate or purity number. A product page identifies the research material being offered. A lot number identifies a specific inventory batch. An analytical report or Certificate of Analysis (COA) describes the sample and tests named on that report. A useful review checks that those records refer to the same material before drawing any conclusions from the reported results.
1. Start with an exact lot match
The first check is traceability. Compare the lot number on the research material with the lot number shown in the supplier's lot record and analytical documentation. Product name alone is not enough: two lots of the same catalog item can have different manufacturing dates, test dates, or analytical results. Lot-specific documentation should identify the exact batch it is intended to describe.

2. Check what the report actually measured
A COA is not one universal test. Different analytical methods answer different questions, and a report should be read according to the methods it names. For example, chromatographic testing can report a purity result based on separated components, while mass-spectrometric testing can provide evidence about molecular identity. A quantity or content measurement answers a different question again. One result should not be silently substituted for another.
A high chromatographic purity value describes the result of the stated analysis; by itself, it does not establish every property of the material, the amount in a container, sterility, endotoxin status, or suitability for a particular experiment. Those questions require their own evidence when they are relevant to a laboratory's work.
3. Separate identity, purity, and quantity
Identity, purity, and quantity are separate data points. Identity addresses whether the analyzed material is consistent with the stated compound. Purity addresses the relative composition reported by the stated method. Quantity or content addresses how much of the named material was measured. A complete record may contain more than one of these results, but the presence of one does not automatically establish the others.
4. Confirm the laboratory and report identifiers
Useful analytical documentation should make the testing source identifiable. Review the laboratory name, report or task number, test date, sample name, and any verification key or report identifier supplied by the laboratory. When the laboratory provides an independent verification portal, use the identifiers from the document rather than relying only on a screenshot or copied PDF.
The existence of a report is not the same as proving that it belongs to the material being reviewed; the identifiers are what create that connection.
5. Review the supplied amount and product identity
Compare the report with the product's stated research amount and identity fields. Depending on the material, useful catalog fields can include the common name, supplied amount, SKU, CAS number, molecular formula, molecular weight, sequence, and whether the item is a single compound or a blend. For blends, component-level identity is especially important because the mixture does not represent one single molecular entity.
6. Understand what a COA does not establish
Laboratory documentation is evidence about the sample and methods stated in the document. It is not a clinical evaluation, a medical recommendation, a dosing guide, or proof of human or veterinary safety or efficacy. It also does not replace the procedures, acceptance criteria, or quality requirements of the laboratory conducting the research.

- Match the product name and supplied amount.
- Match the lot number character for character.
- Identify the testing laboratory.
- Record the report, task, or verification identifier.
- Check the test date and sample description.
- Read each result together with the analytical method that produced it.
- Keep identity, purity, and quantity results conceptually separate.
- Use an independent laboratory verification portal when one is available.
- Confirm that the report applies to the current lot rather than a prior batch.
- Do not infer human or veterinary suitability from research documentation.
